Want to have a lot of fun and help birds and nature at the same time? Do a Birdathon in May! It's challenging, exhilarating, and - beware - addictive! Birdathoners just can't help coming back for more, year after year!

More than 7,500 people from across Canada (and from several countries around the world) participate in and/or sponsor Birdathon in May of every year. During a 24-hour period in May, they attempt to find as many bird species as they can, sponsored at a flat rate, or on a per-species basis. Nearly $200,000 can be raised this way in a year. Birders can designate a favourite conservation organization to receive a portion of the funds they raise. Bird observatories (such as the Beaverhill Bird Observatory) can also be designated as recipients of fund raising.

Your dollars in action!
When I sponsor a participant, where does the money go?

To the Baillie Fund, which provides funds for conservation projects, with priority to those involving volunteer naturalists. Since its inception in 1976, the Fund has awarded $447,000 in grants to 444 bird conservation and research projects in Canada.
  1. To students at Canadian universities who apply for the annual $1,000 James L. Baillie Student Research Award.
  2. To local conservation organizations. Birdathon participants can designate a conservation club to receive a share of the profits. Costs are covered by Bird Studies Canada.
  3. To designated members of the Canadian Migration Monitoring Network (CMMN) such as the Beaverhill Bird Observatory. Over $19,000 was raised last year for CMMN bird observatories across Canada.
  4. To Bird Studies Canada to support programs that advance the understanding, appreciation, and conservation of wild birds and their habitats.
  5. Tax receipts are automatically issued to all sponsors donating $10.00 or more

Count yourself in - join over 7,000 people in this fun, fundraising event. By sponsoring a participant in the annual Baillie Birdathon, you are joining thousands of supporters across Canada in an effort to take action for bird conservation, and provide much needed funds for local conservation, migration monitoring, young scholars, and the latest research for conservation planning.
